Have You Ever Seen A Stove Like This?

H

Help!  Have you ever seen a stove like this?  Me either!  It is huge.... and old.  Anyway, this is the stove that is in the house we are trying to buy.  The side door is for keeping things warm... I think.  Just very peculiar, because I have never seen one like it before.

We did two inspections yesterday.... In the RAIN.  For months we have had very little if any rain and don't you know that the day we go to do inspections it is going to rain ALL week!  We all looked like drowned rats yesterday.

There are just a few things that the inspectors found during the process.  There were some small electrical issues, jut some updates of the plug in receptacles.  The french doors to the back had some dry rot around the frame, and we could not open them.  They were locked and no one had a key.. really??  There is an inspection people... come on... we need to check these things!  Who is to say that if you open the doors, they will even stay in place.  ( Okay,, they probably will, but it would be nice to know)

The biggest issue to come out of the inspection is a small roof leak in one of the bedrooms.  (Glad it was raining so we could see it)  It is in one of the corners where the roof meets the front porch, and it appears to not be such a big deal.  The problem lies in will the seller fix it properly?  The seller signed a contract stating that he would fix it, but the Short Sale bank is stating the property is in "AS-IS" condition.  Very confusing, because if you are trying to finance a property, there really can't be these kind of issues.   With a VA loan, I believe that it will have to be fixed properly or we won't be able to purchase it.   Another wait and see moment....

So, any thoughts on the stove?

January 2013.  We have lived in this house for 18 months.  I have learned to love this old stove, it works like a champ!  Hopefully it will last a long, long time as it is so huge we will have to re do the kitchen completely when it dies.

The stove is electric? I guess I'm wondering how well it works. I would tend to use it until I could figure out how to replace it as you probably won't find another one wide enough to fill the space. I think a warming area sounds kinda cool. But there is the OLD factor. Wait and see? Oops, there we go again:)

My friend Craig has a deluxe version of this stove from the 50's. What makes it deluxe? It has a little secret drawer at the top that stores plastic salt and pepper shakers that were custom made for the stove. They were white plastic that has yellowed over time.

The house I grew up in had an electric stove with a side door like that, my mom stored cookie sheets, cake pans, stuff like that.

Thanks for all the feedback on the stove. The stove is from the 50s... and the house was built in the 1990s. Go figure. The kitchen was built around the gigantic stove. Bizarre.

I'd be VERY concerned about the leak - you could be looking at a $5000 fix. I would want the asking price adjusted for sure.
The side oven on that stove, I believe, is for baking bread.
Anyhow Lisa - we just wrapped up a 5 part series on buying/selling/staging. Feel free to check it out :)

My husband's grandmother had a stove like that. The left back burner was a deep well, you could push the burner down into a deep area and put a pot on top and cook things overnight sort of like a crockpot. She made great baked beans this way. I would love to have that stove.

Wonderful solutions.I’d like to recommend checking out a lot around the idea of french fries. What exactly are you looking for though?

Of course, I've seen a stove like that at my relatives! Good luck with the short sale. I've heard they are fraught with surpises.

i used to have one similar. its a 40 inch?? i did like the storage of the extra side area for pots. i also liked the extra room on top. i replaced my old one (brown) with a newer white model. i had to hunt for that size. they only made one new model in 40 inch white. my newest stove is a flat top and i have it centered in the stove area.
