Vinegar

Yes, Vinegar. I just wanted to share my experience with Vinegar used as a softner. Let me start by saying that I was reading about making my own detergent to further reduce my spending bill. I still want to start using my own homemade detergent (check TipNut for recipes), I just have yet to start. But, in researching the homemade detergent I also read that one could use Vinegar as a softener. Really??? I did not know that.

So, this whole week I have been using Vinegar as a softner. And It works just fine! Who Knew!!

The clothes come out of the dryer ( or off of the line outside) smelling really clean. And the clothes that come off the line are reasonable soft too. Yep, the simple things amaze me! There are probably lots of you all that already knew this simple fact, but I wanted to share for the few that did not.
The amount of vinegar that I use is about 1/2 a cup. I kinda eyeball it!

A quick question....how much vinegar are you using per load?

Another frugal use of vinegar: I use it to soak my dental retainer. Cheap, easy and works better then the sample the orthodontist gave me.

Oh, vinegar rules! It's got a gazillion uses, including as fabric softener. And your laundry doesn't smell like salad dressing, LOL!
Try it as a hair conditioner once in a while. You'll be amazed at how soft it makes your hair (don't worry, again, there is no salad smell). If you do use it, just mix a little in a cup of water, then dump that on your head. Your hair will feel somewhat 'strange' at first, but don't worry about that. It will be utterly gorgeous when it is dry! And shiny!
I do have to say that I mostly use dryer sheets through the winter, because the vinegar doesn't seem to help with static. But for 3/4 of the year, it's vinegar all the way!

Great tip.

I use vinegar as a rinse aid in my dishwasher and it's fantastic.

I use it for softener and in the wash load too, I have a son with bladder issues and he is incontinent and often his clothes have strong odors and the vinegar really helps to remove those odors..plus it is cheap

I love it as a fabric softener. I had never realized how much soap was left in my clothes until I started using vinegar..it strips out the residue.

I've been using denture tablets to clean my mouthguard, but will have to try it now!

I bet using it in the dishwasher would be great! It'd help disinfect it too! I use it to clean my coffeepot, so I'll have to use in DW too..when I get one!
