Money Saving Monday Week 2 The Saved Quarter Challenge

This past week was a successful budget week.  I managed to pay **cash** for groceries and drug store items.  By using cash for my purchases, I really did not want  to buy anything and deplete my cash supply.  Just seeing those bills in my wallet motivated me not to spend!!  But, we did need to eat this week, and so far this week I spent 72.00 on groceries.  I will have to visit the store again this week for milk and bread, but hopefully that should be about it.

I reviewed our Credit Card debt and the total is 12,000 dollars give or take a dollar or two.  I am going to apply for a no interest credit card this week.  But before I do that, I need to talk to our mortgage broker and find out if that will affect our application in a negative way.  I sent him an Email this morning, and should hear back from him tomorrow.   I did not think of that last week when I pledged to pay down my debt, Oops!  Regardless of his answer, I am still motivated to pay off the credit cards, it will just include the interest.

For the next week or so, I will be keeping more cash in our checking accounts.  We are hoping to  hear about the house we have a contract on and when the bank agrees to sell it to us we will then have to pay for inspections for termites, septic tank, and the well.  The house inspection is included in the deal already.  We also want to keep a little more cash on hand for moving expenses, deposits, etc.
I applied for a part time job with Starbucks yesterday.  I could get a part-time job doing what I do for my full time job.... but then I would start to hate what I love to do.  Does that make sense?  I love what I do!! In the past, when I have worked part time and full time in my career choice, I quickly lost  my passion for my it.

So, I thought I would give Starbucks a try.  They have great benefits for full and part time employees:
Full health-care benefits (medical, dental, vision and alternative services) are offered to all employees, including part-timers who work at least 240 hours per calendar quarter. The EAP is available to all employees. Employees share in the company’s growth via "Bean Stock" (stock options) of up to 14 percent of their gross pay, and a stock-investment plan allows them to buy shares of Starbucks common stock at a discount (85 percent of fair market value) through payroll deductions. The company also matches employees’ contributions to their "Future Roast" 401(k) plans, adding from 25 to 150 percent of the first 4 percent of pay, depending on length of service.

And you get a "free" bag of Starbucks coffee every week.  How can you beat that!!!
Hope to hear from them soon!!

Good luck to you on your Starbucks interview.

That sounds great! What a difference a few more hours of work each week will make to your budget and debt repayment. I wouldn't think your Credit card consolidation would make any difference re purchase of house - they would know the state of your finances anyway. To me it seems like a win/win situation.

I have heard nothing but great things about working for Starbucks for the bennies.
I am in the same boat, way too much cc debt, and I may have to take a month or so off from paying it down so that I can finish my Roth IRA.
Good luck :)

Good luck with your interview!

I agree, knowing you have to pay cash for things makes you really question those impulse purchases!

I love paying with cash, it saves the splurges, and the pay for it later attitude.

I'm going to all-cash for groceries/household stuff too. I overspend like crazy when I use my debit card, and that makes balancing the checkbook a nightmare! Good luck on your goals!

Wow, I had no idea Starbucks gives benefits to part-time employees. I may look into working there! Keep us posted on the job!
