I Wrote A Letter To The Company President

retrieved from shutterstock
From the day that I was let go from my former job, I knew that I would have to write a letter to the president of the company.  There was so much that I wanted him to  about how this action affected me emotionally and financially.  In fact, I asked him for a small severance package.  After you read it, let me know what you think, okay? Thanks.  (Last names and locations have been removed for privacy)

August 25, 2011

Dear Mr. ______ ,

Hello Bobby, My name is Lisa _________.  I was recently employed with your company, ________Radiology.  In fact, I have had the pleasure of meeting you at your corporate headquarters and at the imaging center.
I am writing to you today to express my sadness and disappointment about my recently eliminated position at ________ Radiology.  In the brief eight weeks that I was there, I found great pleasure in taking care of the patients and performing quality ultrasound studies.   The staff and technologists were wonderful and I miss working with them.

In this world of business I understand that certain decisions have to be made that benefit the company.  But I wanted you to know how the decision to eliminate my position affected me.  Previously I was employed at _______________in Orlando for eight years.  I provided them with quality work and loyal service.  Our family recently moved to the _______ area, and I wanted to find employment nearby that would be closer to my new home.

Several months ago, I received a call from your former HR director, Melissa and was considered for an interview with Janice, at _______Radiology.  When I spoke to both of these fine ladies regarding the available position, I clearly stated what my qualifications were, what my ARDMS registries were and what exams I was qualified to perform.  I did not mislead anyone into thinking that I could perform Echos or that I was registered in vascular ultrasound.  I did state that I will be registered in Vascular (RVT) ultrasound by the end of the year.   They both said that would be fine and the position (40 hours) was offered to me.  I accepted and gave my 4 week notice to my former employer.

I began working for ________Radiology July 5, 2011.  Within two weeks I noticed that my current position was being advertised online.  I asked Janice about this, but at the time she did not know anything about it.  She did confirm it at a meeting several days later.  I wonder if you knew how that made me feel?

Janice also told me that I will have a reduction in hours when they hire the new tech.  I said that I appreciated that, as these are difficult times and a few hours would be better than no hours.  As you probably know, that was not the truth.  About two weeks later, August 12, 2011, I was told that my position was eliminated.  My services were no longer needed.  That was a difficult day, rejection is not easy for anyone.

At the beginning of this journey, I was welcomed into your “family” and told that this is the job you will have the rest of your working life.  We take care of our family members”.  My treatment was not professional nor was it very kind.

Bobby, If I had found a job before you terminated my position, I would have had the professional courtesy to give you the required two weeks’ notice.  I am asking you for the same courtesy, that being a small severance package of two weeks’ salary.  Remember, I left a job of 8 years and my seniority to come to your  Radiology center to become part of your family with the indication that this was a long term place of employment.  As we both know, it did not turn out that way.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this situation.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Respectfully,

Lisa  BS, RDMS

I love that you are sticking up for yourself despite how hard this has been. Your letter is professional, articulate, and will hopefully open Bobby's eyes to how his company is actually being run. Best of luck with whatever the outcome is!

Thanks Michelle. It was an awkward experience, to say the least.

I think it's an excellent letter and it's good that you're writing to him.

with the severance pay -Isn't it the law there that they have to give you two weeks notice or pay you two weeks wages?

Well written! He would have to have no heart to deny that. I am so sorry that they let you go like that with no notice.
