Update on Mom

Instead of this just being my nightmare, which can sound a little selfish, it is more of an expected situation a family with aged parents mighthave to deal with.  The initial phone call and what quickly happened after made it all seem like a surreal dream.    With time, we all have had time to process and plan what may happen next.

My mom is no longer in ICU.  She has been moved to the Neuro floor for now.  I did speak to the neurologist yesterday and  she did provide a little more information.  Mom does have a mass/tumor in the posterior left side of her brain.  It is suspected  to be metastasis from the breast cancer that she had over 5 years ago.  She also has a 4 cm brain bleed.  But the docs are more concerned with the brain tumor.  ( I have a hard time saying, typing or even thinking it is brain cancer.....but it is).

The doc ordered full body CT's and MRI's to evalute and locate any other massses.  Those were done yesterday and we have not yet heard what the reports are saying.  That should be make know to us today.
All of this information will be taken to a "tumor committee" tomorrow and discussed with a panel of specialists and docs to decide the best and next plan of action.

The options are major surgery, minor surgery, radiaton, chemo.... or nothing.  Lots of options.

I finally got to go and see mom last night.  She looks good and is in good spirits.  Her right arm and leg are "too heavy" for her to move.  She also has limited sight in her right eye.  We had a nice visit and a few laughts.  Thank God she has not lost her sense of humor!!    My daughter will be going up to the hospital today to visit here and if the docs come through with a report, she can catch that as well.

My dad has a hard time processing the factthat my mom is not here and is in the hospital.  He is use to a certain routine and that routine has definitely been affected by all this.  And he misses my mom terribly.  All we have told him is that mom is still having tests that the doctors will probably figure out what is going on by Thursday.

I did get more sleep last night so I am feeling pretty good this morning.  I do need to get some real Coca Cola, that always helps boost my energy!

I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. I hate when they say that it could have stemmed from previous cancer..that is so scary. (My son-in-law is a two-time cancer survivor...I worry about a return visit all the time) Hang in there Lisa. It has to be tough, especially this time of year. Do you have siblings that can help?

Lisa, I am so sorry you are going through this. Might I make a suggestion that you hire someone like "Comfort Keepers" to come stay with your Dad part of the day? it would give you a break. Medicare and other insurance might even pay for at least part of it. Good luck and keep us posted. I will sent happy thoughts and prayers your direction.

Tough times for you and your family. Your mom sounds like a wonderful and strong lady, being able to laugh in the face of such trying times. What a blessing. I'm glad you have your daughter helping you out with visits and with you dad - I really feel for him when he can't really understand what's going on.
Keep us posted, and I'm thinking of you,
hugs
Jane

Only positive thoughts coming from here too. I have a very good friend that just went through a second operation to remove a brain tumor and he was back to full fitness in no time (literally a couple of weeks!). Whatever the course of action is, I hope your mom has the same result.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this, but for your parents' sake, I'm glad you and your husband are there for them. Imagine if your mother had to go through this on her own.

Oh, Lisa, thinking of you and sending positive wishes for your mum. You have to be strong to support your dad - dads have a bit of a problem functioning without their other halves.
