Food Waste Friday: A Day Late

This week has been super busy, but for all the right reasons.  I returned back to work and my mom has regained enough of her health that she and my dad want to get back to their normal too.
Earlier this week, I went through my pantry and discarded items that were out of date or never used.  Now posting my before pictures is a bit embarrassing but confession is good for the soul.

TOP SHELVES OF PANTRY

MIDDLE SHELVES OF PANTRY

BOTTOM SHELVES OF PANTRY
Sometimes it is just easier to close the door and not look at all the clutter.  But thanks to Carla's De-cluttering challenge... I have been motivated to purge the unnecessary.

What follows is the purged items......

EXPIRED DATES....

JUST ANOTHER VIEW OF THE WASTE

COULD THE PILE GET ANY HIGHER??

EXPIRED IN 2008!!!   SIGH......
Now that the truth is out there and the expired items and unused items are disposed of.... here is the result  of the decluttering

BOTTOM OF CLEAN PANTRY

TOP SHELVES OF PANTRY

MIDDLE SHELVES OF PANTRY
So there you go!  My worst nightmare of de-cluttering so far.  The pantry has never looked so good and it sure does feel great to be able to open the pantry door without stuff falling out!

Wow! Good job. I found embarrassingly old dates when I cleaned out my pantry also. However, I just do it one shelf at a time.

Great job!!!!! It can be hard to do food rotation so nothing goes to waste, my biggest problem is salad dressing, they have such a short shelf life. I end up not remembering what I have in the ref and buy more, by the end of summer it all has to be thrown out

Notice it says 'better if used by'...not expiration date. Yes, I agree that 2008 is out of date but I wouldn't throw stuff away if it was a month or two past the expiration date. But then again, I try not to buy a ton of processed foods. I would also keep foods like yogurt and sour cream that past their date.

Good work. Did you keep the pasta though? I would imagine that wouldn't go "bad" by the expiration date.

Ugh, this reminds me that I need to clean out my cabinets in the worst way... I am constantly finding boxes of snack crackers that expired months ago. I think it's a sign that I need to quit buying them. Your pantry looks great!

That is a shame so much food was beyond the expiry date but at least now you can see what you have thereby eliminating future waste! You've reminded me that I need to place NEW purchases in behind the older stuff so the old gets used before the new. Great job Lisa!

It is a shame indeed! But, I am motivated to keep the shelves straight and the waste at a minimum.

I only cleaned it because I could not fit anything else into it! That is sad. :)

No.... the pasta went too!

Yes. I did notice that. If it close, I will use it.

Thanks! Yes, salad dressing does go quick!

I had to do the whole thing at once! It was driving me crazy.

Wow, looks terrific!!!! We found lots of expired stuff on our shelves back in January, too.
