Food Waste Friday: Lemons but no lemonade

I love the convenience of shredded lettuce for tacos. But unfortunately, we did not use it all. Makes me glad I did not buy two bags.

As of late, I have been adding fresh lemon to my Coke Zero. But evidently this little lemon missed the boat. I found it rolling around the crisper drawer next to the above bag of shredded lettuce.

The cantaloupe has seen better days too. It does look okay but it definitely does not taste okay.

Kinda bitter....

And here is the fresh lemon juice that I did not know I had in the back of the fridge. It has been there's too long so it is getting pitched.

That is it for the wasted food extravaganza. It has been worse, that's for sure.

Food waste Friday: My Science Experiment

Evidently there were three more of the clementines hiding in the vegetable crisper. I found them when I found the onion that its starting to shoot buds out.

Note to self: do not buy the clementines again next year. They were a total waste of money. But.... They do grow pretty mold, don't you think?

Bleech.

Food Waste Friday: Yuck

Yuck! Here is the food waste week in review....

This was a total waste of my money. These pretty Roma tomatoes were neglected and now they are a sloppy fuzzy mess.

This left over chili and rice is about 3 weeks old. It was hiding way in the back of the refrig. Looks a little green doesn't it?

A lonely Clementine orange tucked in the vegetable drawer. Brown and yucky.

Last but not least.... These out of date hash browns from September. Who knows when I actually bought them!

How was your food waste this week?

Food Waste Friday: It's in the bag.

There is not too much going on in my refrigerator this week. Grocery shopping has been for basic staples such as coffee, milk, bread, sandwich meat. Due to a crazy hectic schedule we had simple meals for dinner or we ate out.

I had good intentions with the lettuce, but it has seen better days.

Food Waste Friday: Oh My Darling Clementines

My Clementines, my sweet clementines.... how did I ever forget that you were in the bottom drawer of the fridge?

I did manage to rescue 4 good oranges out of this bag.  Luckily, they were still delish!

I am going to have to keep a closer eye on the bottom drawer of the fridge.

Food Waste Friday: All Clear

I am happy to report that this week has been a great week as far as food waste.  The yucky slimy cucumbers and gooey mushrooms from last week are but a distant memory.   The primary reason that this week was so successful is that my husband is on second shift.  For me, this means I don't really have to prepare a large dinner.  And any left-overs were taken care of by me.

This has also helped my grocery bill. And if all goes as planned, next week should go the same way. I have to say  I enjoy having the house to myself in the evenings.  I really get a lot done.  The list of projects goes on and on but that is just the way it goes!

Have a great day!!

Food Waste Friday: Slimy is Yucky

Happy Friday!  It is that time again to search the deep recesses of your fridge and seek out what was hidden and forgotten.  Last week I really didn't look that hard for any waste.  This week, the mushrooms and slimy cucumber kinda found their way to the front of the fridge.

My food waste has definitely been worse in the past.  There was a time when I could fill a post with the pictures of my wasteful ways.  This little bit of was is not so bad.  I can live with it.  Off to the compost pile it goes!

I have wasted mushrooms before.  I may just need to stop buying them.  In theory they are good for me, but the reality it only the compost pile is benefiting.

Food Waste Friday: All Clear Around Here

Still at my mom's this week.  We are happy to report that there is NO wasted food at her house.  My house may be a different story.  I bet next week I will have a bunch of pictures to share.  But that is next week.

This week we got nothing!!

This weekend, the tile guy is suppose to finish the bathroom, and hopefully by next week I will be back home.  I am so looking forward to it.  You just don't know.

Today, I am going to SeaWorld with my son-in-law and grandson for a couple of hours.  A neighbor is going to stay with my parents.  And I am definitely looking forward to that!

Hope your Friday is awesome!

Food Waste Friday: Shades of Yellows

A little pale....
This week I have been staying at my mom's.  She was in the hospital for a few days and I am here taking care of my dad.  No doubt there is a good chance that have some food waste in my own refrigerator, but since I am not home I thought I would investigate my mom's refrigerator.

Indeed, there are a couple of culprits hiding in the refrigerator.
As a rule, my mom is VERY good about NOT wasting food of any kind.  But since she was in the hospital and she was not here to monitor the situation.

What's my excuse?  I did not know where to look.  And they were covered by tinfoil.  Here is the first culprit.  Sliced peaches.  For dinner, my mom prepares a nice meal for my dad and it will usually include fruit.
Just not that appealing, are they?

Moving on to the canned goods........

Chipotle corn is definitely not my first, second,or third choice for canned corn.  Evidently my parents like it.  Again, the can was hiding under the tin foil so I missed it earlier in the week.

Or it could have been subliminal.  Maybe I missed it on purpose.

no comment. :)
A little pale, don't you agree?

Food Waste Friday: These Were Hiding, I Swear

These mushrooms may not look that bad in the picture, but they are wrinkly and squishy.  I have a hard time eating mushrooms but they are so good for you.  The texture of them kinda creeps me out.  They may be salvageable if I use them by dinner tonight.  But I am not holding my breath.

Now this lettuce has see better days.  It is down to the end of the stalk/head of Romaine.  The leaves are bitter and not worth rescuing.  This was actually hidden under the bag of apples and I didn't really see it.

And if you don't count the mushrooms ( that I probably should have never bought anyway) it is not a bad week for food waste.
How was your week?

Food Waste Friday: A Day Late

This week has been super busy, but for all the right reasons.  I returned back to work and my mom has regained enough of her health that she and my dad want to get back to their normal too.
Earlier this week, I went through my pantry and discarded items that were out of date or never used.  Now posting my before pictures is a bit embarrassing but confession is good for the soul.

TOP SHELVES OF PANTRY

MIDDLE SHELVES OF PANTRY

BOTTOM SHELVES OF PANTRY
Sometimes it is just easier to close the door and not look at all the clutter.  But thanks to Carla's De-cluttering challenge... I have been motivated to purge the unnecessary.

What follows is the purged items......

EXPIRED DATES....

JUST ANOTHER VIEW OF THE WASTE

COULD THE PILE GET ANY HIGHER??

EXPIRED IN 2008!!!   SIGH......
Now that the truth is out there and the expired items and unused items are disposed of.... here is the result  of the decluttering

BOTTOM OF CLEAN PANTRY

TOP SHELVES OF PANTRY

MIDDLE SHELVES OF PANTRY
So there you go!  My worst nightmare of de-cluttering so far.  The pantry has never looked so good and it sure does feel great to be able to open the pantry door without stuff falling out!

Food Waste Friday: Brrrrrrrrrrrr! A Little Frosty!

FoodWasteFriday
linked to the Frugal Girl

It is that time again, time to search out the refrigerator and see what is lurking in the deep dark recesses. The refrigerator is actually okay, but the Freezer..... well, that is another story all together.

My freezer is pretty full, so full in fact you can;t really tell what is in there. I dumped most of the stuff on the counter this morning and discovered a few frosty items that need to go.

These meatballs are left over from a birthday party in June.

Here they are up close......

And this hunk of frozen ham bone, well I had good intentions to make homemade bean soup, but instead I will be throwing it away. Boo!!

Next week is another week! How did you do with your food waste?

Food Waste Friday: All Clear Around Here

Today I am happy to report that we have no food waste to report.  Our grocery shopping consists mostly of the few necessities like bread, milk and eggs.  My mom's church family has been so generous with bringing food and the meals are enough for two days.

The curvy road home

Today we get to go home for a weekend.  We are having a new bed delivered to the house today.  This is part of our plan to set up two households to take care of my parents.  This is the first time we have been home together for a weekend in 9 weeks.  It sure does not seem that long.......  okay, maybe it does.

We have many projects to complete.  The painting, the Decluttering of the garage..... Or we may do nothing at all and just take a break.  Some habits I just can't break.  The evidence is in this post at my other blog. (Maybe I am a "hoarder" at heart! )

Have a great weekend!

Food Waste Friday: The Jig is Up

Here we go, time for some food waste show and tell.  This is what happens when you dig deep into your fridge........reaching the places that have gone unnoticed and untouched.

Why untouched and unnoticed?  Hidden.  Hidden behind the 12 pack of diet coke, that is why.

First culprit:  a lonely can of jellied cranberry sauce. Lonely and old.

Expiration date of May 2011.  Oh yeah.... this is the can that got away.  How did my mom or myself miss that one?    Oh yes.... it was hidden.  Behind the 12 pack of diet coke.

Next on the chopping block is the following:   A little but of yogurt.  Sugar free no less.

And now the reveal:

Yep.  Expired.  But you knew that was coming, didn't ya?

Food Waste Friday: Salmon Surprise( Or The One That Got Away)

During my mom's post brain surgery recovery, we have been blessed by her church family.  They have
signed up   to bring our family meals and the variety of tasty food has been absolutely wonderful.

For the most part, there has been little or no food waste with these wonderful meals.  The casserole below was very tasty.  It is a salmon noodle casserole and what makes it extra special, the couple that brought it over actually caught the salmon in Alaska.

Somehow, this dish got pushed back into never-never land of our fridge.  That is too bad, because it really was good.

Just in case you needed to see it up close.................

Low and behold, there was another sleeper in the left over department.  The remnants of a homemade coleslaw.

Overall, it was a pretty good week!  How was your week?

Food Waste Friday: The Hidden Soup

There has not been much cooking going on here this week.  Members from my mom's church have been bringing over meals about every other day.  The dinners that they are providing are so delicious.  You can definitely "taste" the love in their food.  Luckily enough, they are providing enough food that we have leftovers for the next day.

But..... deep in the refrigerator there was a rouge container of leftover homemade chicken noodle soup from last week.   How did we miss that?

Oh well.  We are looking forward to another week of meals provided by the members of the church.  That sure makes my job a little easier around here.  We appreciate all that her church is doing for our family.

Food Waste Friday: All Clear Around Here

I am happy to report that as of today, there is no food waste going at my home OR my mom and dad's home.  Last week, I went back to my house and cleared out all the perishables from my fridge.  Here at my mom's house, we have had great friends and family bring meals over, so I have a lot of left-overs but so far none has gone to waste.  Next week could be a totally different story.

Food Waste Friday I Got Nothing!

It is no small wonder, but I have no food waste to report for this week!!  But check back next week, because there will probably be a forgotten Thanksgiving leftover with fuzzy things growing on it!

Food Waste Friday and a Left-Over

Oh, how I love the accountability that comes with "Food Waste Friday".   This week was better for me in the fresh food division.  Not perfect, but definitely better.  The bananas from last week found their way into a loaf of banana bread.  I love it when you can re-purpose before you have to throw it out.

This week there is another almost "food waste" vegetable.  It is the zucchini. Why I did not use this pack of zucchini sooner I couldn't tell you..   But I think there are parts of the zucchini that are salvageable and can be turned into zucchini bread.

 Now on to the "left-over".......

I also found this left-over storage container of beef stew.  My mom had sent it over after my knee surgery last week.  It was the best, and we certainly did not waste too much of it.  Meals are ALWAYS better when they are made by your mom....
