Food Waste Friday: These Were Hiding, I Swear

These mushrooms may not look that bad in the picture, but they are wrinkly and squishy.  I have a hard time eating mushrooms but they are so good for you.  The texture of them kinda creeps me out.  They may be salvageable if I use them by dinner tonight.  But I am not holding my breath.

Now this lettuce has see better days.  It is down to the end of the stalk/head of Romaine.  The leaves are bitter and not worth rescuing.  This was actually hidden under the bag of apples and I didn't really see it.

And if you don't count the mushrooms ( that I probably should have never bought anyway) it is not a bad week for food waste.
How was your week?

I know what you mean about mushrooms. If they are cooked too much, they get rubbery which I don't like either.

When my mushrooms are like that, I toss them in my stock making bag in the freezer. Usually they're okay for that.

Oh wow. Stop looking inside my fridge! My mushrooms always do that, because I cant use them all in a single dish (well, sometimes I do to avoid waste). I manage to salvage them most times, but the first few tries, they were spoiled... and the romaine lettuce, yup. Mine gets bitter FAST! No wonder I'm willing to pay the extra for bagged salad... This week though, I have no waste... except maybe that lettuce (which I was eating last night anyway), but it was rather bitter. Yuck. I'll probably throw it away tonight.

Nothing like some yucky mushrooms. I can never use them up very fast. Could be because my kids think they are a foreign object that may attack them.

Great job on not too much waste. I hate when my mushrooms end up bad, mostly because I really do love them. But they have a pretty strong flavor so a little goes a long way most of the time.

It's usually lettuce I tend to throw out we never ever seem to finish one, I have been thinking of buying the loose leaves maybe that way we will only buy what we need......

I just came across your blog for the first time (via My Broken Coin) and I love this idea! I just looked back at the past few months of your "Food Waste Friday" posts and I don't think I would fare as well as you do, but it's something I've been consciously trying to do better about. I've been making an effort to plan meals for the week and choose a few recipes that will use the same ingredients.

Barb - I love the idea for a stock bag in the freezer. Do you do just veggies?
