Computer Issues Resolved

A couple of days ago. I posted about my computer being so darn slow!!! I asked for suggestions on what to do and I got some really great suggestions from Ginger a writer of many blogs!

She suggested the following

Crap Cleaner - Download and use. http://www.ccleaner.com/On their toolbar down the left side of your screen for it, check off ALL the check blocks EXCEPT for anything having to do with forms, form history etc. That will delete any auto-fill info like passwords, addresses etc. I've used this for 3 years and have never been sorry for the thousands of items I have deleted.

Don't be afraid to use it. The first time I did keep a backup but I have never needed it. Be sure to click on the two different tabs at the top and use the icons down the left side to clear the registry. HUGE improvements may happen quickly!

Next, update and run an anti-virus program. Sounds like you are infected with a trojan. Spybot software may also help. I have SpySweeper and did pay for it
. There are some free ones, but this one works the best in my opinion. Make a pass through your files, pictures, music and delete or move anything you don't really need on your computer. It is a good time to backup things if your computer is doing wacko things.

After you do a reboot following this step, do a defrag. If it has been a long time, do a couple of defrags back to back. Reboot again. Hopefully, this will solve your problems. One scanner is not enough. I have a whole arsenal of them.

If your computer is still slow, go find another free anti-virus and run it. No single virus program will ever be complete. I personally use Norton 360. These steps should work no matter what type of operating system you are using.

I am happy to report that the above helpful hints greatly improved the speed of my computer. What a relief! Thanks so Much Ginger! You don't know how close I was to buying a new laptop and pitching out the old desktop computer! VERY close!

( and thanks to you too Peggy!)

You are SO welcome. After you spend a day surfing be sure to run CrapCleaner. Some days when I am clicking massive amounts of links I may stop and use CC once an hour. I am a scanning, file dumping, defraging fool.

Another thing you can do is go into the settings on your browser and have it set to auto dump the temp files and history every time you close it. I do not recommend this to people who have become dependant on old cached links. But, I dump, clean, clear anything and everything I can super often.

I defrag at least once a week. With Norton 360, I now have the option of setting that automatically too.

One last warning (thought)...
Back up your favorites. This week when Microsoft did their updates (always the second Tuesday every month)it wiped out my favorites. Luckily I use Maxthon for my browser. Maxthon backs them up automatically if you set that as a preference. I also import my favs from one browser to another ever now and again. But the real lifesaver is just backing them up on a thumbdrive.

In short...
Use a surge protector (a good one).
Use several types of scanners.
Backup. Backup. Backup.

Do NOT end up with that sinking, physically ill feeling you get from the loss of files or favorites. It isn't pretty!

I know. IDK where I got the link to ccleaner, but it WORKS! And I use a registry cleaner and another crap cleaner thing. Sometimes I go through with spyware killers and virus killers. Any time I do these things, my computer REALLY speeds up! I mean REALLY speeds it right up.
